Program Description

This course is specifically designed for the first line support staff working in the ambulatory care clinics, nursing homes, skilled care facilities and in the hospitals. Wound care technicians provide administrative and clinical support to the Licensed medical care providers. Wound care technician performs assigned tasks assigned by a licensed clinical staff member of a wound care team. Wound care technician utilizes specialized knowledge, training and skills, which are based on the clinical research and application of the principles of wound management as acquired by completing a specialized training program. Wound care technician requires clinical supervision / delegation of a medical provider or a licensed nurse. Wound care technician shall perform his/her duties per the prescribing medical provider orders with a focus on patient safety, and function within the parameters of the legal guidelines and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules and regulations; and policies, procedures and guidelines of the employing health care institution or practice setting. The program is appropriate for, and tailored to meet, the educational needs of its participants, regardless of level of current expertise.

Role & Responsibilities of Wound Care Technician

  • To perform focused wound assessment, reassessment, and treatment for all patients and per policy.
  • Assist Medical & Nursing staff during Wound Care Treatments & Procedures.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of pressure injuries.
  • Demonstrates ability to change Negative Pressure Wound dressing appropriately.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply multi-layer compression dressings on bilateral lower extremities appropriately.
  • Demonstrates ability to collect Wound Cultures appropriately.
  • Demonstrates ability to measure the dimensions of the wound accurately.
  • Demonstrate ability to change wound dressing as ordered by the medical provider.
  • Demonstrates ability to check pedal pulses with a hand held doppler.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of different wound dressings and their appropriate use.
  • Ability to enter pertinent clinical data in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) appropriately
  • Participate in skin care programs to prevent skin breakdown.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within the scope of practice / per facility policy.
  • Assists or gives oral hygiene and mouth care.
  • Assists with bathing functions and dressing/undressing as necessary.
  • Assists with nail care and shaving as needed.
  • Assists with lifting, turning, positioning and transporting patients.
  • Makes both occupied and unoccupied bed (as assigned)
  • Assist patients in changing of gown, clothing, linen, etc. PRN.
  • Assists patient with bowel or bladder functions.
  • Checks patients frequently to assure that their personal care needs are being met.
  • Measures and records vital signs.
  • Weigh patients safely.
  • Collects Specimens (i.e. urine, stool, sputum)
  • Provide indwelling catheter care as needed.
  • Performs diabetic finger stick as needed.
  • Assists with keeping patient care areas neat, sanitary and orderly.
  • Appropriately record charges for supplies.
  • Participates in the Interdisciplinary Plan of Care process as assigned.
  • Complies with laws and regulations applicable to the position.
  • Attends and participates in in-service training.
  • Demonstrates proper use of equipment. Reports equipment needs or repairs.
  • Reports and documents any incidents or accidents of patients, staff or visitors to the appropriate facility personnel.
  • Performs duties, which may include transportation of patients, as assigned in Facility Disaster Plan.

The participants will learn how to evaluate and treat wounds by simply following a standardized care model. Program Description

The course is formulated to provide an expanded knowledge and skills on wound management to professional nurses working in acute care and community clinical settings. Program Description

The course is formulated to provide an expanded knowledge and skills on wound debridement to professional wound care nurses working in different clinical settings. In addition, this program prepares the professional wound care nurses to function as part of an interprofessional wound management team, to identify patients at risk for developing wound complications and to provide evidence-based debridement options appropriate for optimal wound healing. This program meets and exceeds the State Board of Nursing Standards regarding Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement.
